Chico Monks
Artist Statement from 2008 solo exhibition
This body of work documents the exploration of two ideas – the wall panel sculptures and the free-standing assemblages.
The wall panels are an exploration of landscape and environment – simply a representation of what I see and what I feel, rather than a protest about human impact. The use of found objects allows me to construct a scene at the speed of my imagination without being hindered by over-justification. Starting from the barest premise, I construct with what is at hand, allowing ideas to evolve without restricting myself to a preconceived outcome. Only when construction is complete does creativity give way to meaning and knowledge. However, some components of my work will always remain aloof to me, avoiding static definitions. Essentially, each work is a landscape or environmental document using disparate objects which have been framed in a single moment.
The free-standing assemblages are childhood memories captured – a toy or a game that teaches morals and values that help guide and construct our lives. Objects suspended and floating, with echoes of molecular constructions that hold memories and experiences from the most impressionable times of our lives.
I hope that the joy I gained in constructing these sculptures is evident and the materials and ideas will trigger your own emotional and aesthetic responses to constructed landscapes and childhood paraphernalia.
