Randall Sinnamon: “Monkey Business” Exhibition 2012 – Artist’s Statement
As complex and intelligent humans, our closest relative in the animal world seems to be the monkey or, more precisely, the ape.
Some of us observe apes in zoos around the world; others cut down their forest habitat for timber or farming; others kill apes for meat; some strive to conserve and protect them from extinction.
But what about our business? What about our existence; our finite time on earth?
We are intelligent. We have social networks and mobile communications. We have money, television and the world-wide-web. We are wise. We can wear make-up and follow fashions. We have alcohol and medicine. We also have war.
We don’t live in zoos or sit around in forests. Surely not – that would be monkey business.
