Brushmarks are the language of my painting – the representation of my hand

In studying the Chinese landscape painters from the 1500’s, I have adapted a direct calligraphic approach to my own mark-making. Working with a changing tempo, I like leaving my brushmarks ‘fresh’ and unadjusted to demonstrate the beginning, middle and ending of each mark. I also let marks intersect each other and morph into solid colour, or juxtapose the fresh marks with areas of bruised washed-off colour or with dry scratchy brushwork
