Some Arcadian Afternoons
As the paintings for this show accumulated I noticed how several of them shared a similar light, specifically late afternoon in late spring / early summer looking north west. On reflection this obviously has a lot to do with the topography of the place where I live and the time of year I painted them but there are other less prosaic reasons too. In art it’s the light most commonly evident in the work of Claude Lorraine and the Classical landscape tradition generally. In life it’s often the easiest time to feel Pastoral feelings after finishing work while checking the cattle before heading home. But it’s also the time when light and the world it illuminates show each other off to the best advantage.
