about the artist

The body of work for this exhibition “Cubism” links back to the use of forms from previous exhibitions, through the continued use of rectangular hollow section (RHS) steel. Although this time rather than elongated sections of RHS put together in abstract compositions, I have cut the RHS pieces to be as long as they are wide and high, therefore creating cubes. Whereas before I have capped or filled the hollow ends with metal, this time I have used Australian hardwoods- Red Box, Yellow Box, Iron Bark, Black Butt….. Using timber adds a softer, earthier element and colour variations. It was through this discovery of capping the RHS with wood instead of metal that prompted the memory of children’s playing blocks.

With this work I have strived to make it appear as though the cubes have been placed by the hand, with no visible joining and with a child-like sensibility of stacking blocks. I have put rhythm into the compositions through the placement of cubes in an intuitive playful manner, trying not to be too self-conscious about the end result or process.

My interest in Cubist painting, collage and sculpture, stems from my fascination with Braque and Picasso’s use of multiple perspective to break up space into geometric form/ shape, leading to constructed sculpture.

The title of this exhibition arrives from a respect and play from the term Cubism. The cube is the form I have selected to use, which I have adopted as the basic element of my sculptures.
