Robin Gibson Gallery is pleased to present New Talent our annual exhibition of young and not so young artists selected from last year’s graduate shows

This year we continue to bring you a taste of the best new talent coming out of our art schools with Benjamin Reid & Melinda Marshman from the National Art School and Ernest Smith from Eora College

In finding their own voices, each of these artists remind us of the endurance, adaptability and relevance of painting in the world of contemporary art

ERNEST Smith, a Wiradjuri man from Dubbo in NSW, spent 40 years in the workforce and never touched a paintbrush. “I became an artist by accident,’‘ he says. “I brought my daughter to Eora College in Sydney to sign her into a course, and the head teacher invited me to join the art class.’‘

Smith is one of the three artists featured in New Talent, an exhibition of works by recent graduates at Robin Gibson Gallery in Sydney’s Darlinghurst. Melinda Marshman, a Sydney based figurative painter and recent graduate of the National Art School, explores ideas of connection within the tradition of portraiture, including her work of oil-on-panel Joanne, pictured. Benjamin Reid, another NAS graduate, explores how photographic and imaged based media can be used to construct paintings, inspired by artists including Gerhard Richter, Andy Warhol, Sigmar Polke and Luc Tuymans. New Talent runs at Robin Gibson Gallery until February 19.
