“Continuing his exploration of subterranean Sydney, recent National Art School graduate Oliver Hopes finds poetry and psychological depth in these C-type photographs that also reveal a Caravaggesque knack for balancing darkness with light”
Michael Fitzgerald, Sydney Morning Herald
Drains II is a further exploration of the themes of my previous series Drains. The unusual architecture and the ways it can accidentally create powerful moods and motifs in a photograph are explored, with particular emphasis on the role of light and dark. I feel that this classic relationship creates an endless potential for re-interpretation by the viewer, and gives rise to an array of emotions and ideas. I am also interested in the way that something so typically “un-beautiful” can be transformed by these factors into something aesthetically pleasing and even romantic.
