Charles Doutney
1908 – 1957
Born in Brisbane in 1908, Doutney studied at the J S Watkins School and the East Sydney Technical College.
It was a rare blood disease which he contracted from wartime service with the R.A.A.F. in New Guinea that caused him to turn to art as a full-time career. He died at age 49, and during his last years produced some of the most exquisite paintings, rich and sensitive in colour and beautifully controlled in structure.
He was the winner of the 1952 Sulman Prize, and his works are held by the Art Gallery of NSW, the Art Gallery of Western Australla, and The National Gallery of Victoria.
