Introducing recent MFA graduate
From Switzerland with Love
2 – 27 November 2019
opening 6-8pm Tuesday 5 November
Laura Badertscher’s work is based on imagery sourced from naturist magazines which aim to reveal the norms and conventions of the nude in art and popular culture. They address the history of the nude, the nude versus the naked and the issue of the male gaze combining high art materials and ideas with lowbrow imagery. In her most recent body of work From Switzerland With Love, the artist draws from her experience of moving back to her home country after a decade in Australia.
The paintings are a continuation of her MFA project Nudies Revolution which she completed at the National Art School, Sydney in 2018. She is imagining herself on a never-ending holiday in the seemingly picturesque environment of Switzerland and Europe. Travelling from the Baltic Sea to Berlin, from Budapest to Venice and back to the Mountains; sometimes real at other times fictional. The somewhat odd imagery including traces of the original graphic design and fragmented text resulted in a body of work, which confounds expectations of the nude in art.
From Switzerland With Love is Laura Badertscher’s first solo show.
