Love Without Words

My paintings evolve through a continual process of accumulation. Instead of aiming for a predetermined image, I construct the surface by making repeated gestures that respond to one another over time. Marks are layered, interrupted, obscured, and rediscovered, allowing the painting to develop according to its own internal logic.

The recurring forms in my work suggest fragments of language, architecture, or landscape, without settling into any single interpretation. They exist in a space between writing and drawing, abstraction and recognition, inviting viewers to explore the work through association rather than certainty. Colour serves as another layer in this conversation, surfacing and receding beneath networks of lines to create shifts in rhythm, depth, and tempo.

Each painting captures its own history. Earlier decisions remain visible beneath later ones, revealing a process of revision rather than resolution. I am interested in how repetition can generate differences and how simple gestures, revisited over time, can accumulate into something unexpectedly complex.

For me, painting is an act of sustained attention. These works are less about reaching fixed meanings and more about creating spaces where ambiguity, movement, and material presence are in constant dialogue.

Andrew Hopkins is a Sydney based artist who completed his BFA at the National Art School Sydney in 2009. He was a finalist in the Brett Whiteley Travelling Scholarship in 2016 and 2017, and a finalist in the William Fletcher Biennial Travelling Fellowship Residency at the British School at Rome in 2013. His works are held in numerous private & corporate collections including Allens Sydney.
