Fifty years have passed since I first studied at the National Art School.
Also I turned seventy recently.
These personal milestones prompted me to paint a celebratory body of work for this exhibition.
And what better way to celebrate, I thought, was to immerse myself in my special place? My garden.
It’s a peaceful, lush, oasis that is tended daily by Tania, my partner and I.
Where the busyness of urban life is left outside the front gate.
From early Spring I had set my easel up daily to record what unfolded before my eyes. The various shades and moods changed constantly as I painted.
Rendering beauty has its challenges. And in recent years I had felt compelled to paint the changing weather events of our times. The massive rains, floods, fires and harsh droughts had occupied my thoughts rather than the peacefulness of my garden. Even though I had often sought refuge there.
It was now time to honor this green haven and to share what it has offered me. This show has been a pleasure & joy to paint. It has grown like the plants themselves and I have learnt so much from this residency in my own garden.
