In her latest body of work, Gina Bruce channels the profound allure of Sydney’s South Head, a locale she initially encountered through a friend’s initiative to propose its inclusion on the National Heritage register. Immersed in the dramatic contrasts of The Gap’s sheer sandstone cliffs and the tranquil allure of Camp Cove beach and Green Point, Bruce’s on-site sketches capture the varied essence of this coastal landscape. Her experiences of sketching amidst these natural wonders have fostered a connection with the location, inspiring a series of paintings that reflect both its rugged majesty and serene beauty.
Bruce’s studio practice transforms these initial drawings into evocative artworks that bridge the gap between observation and memory. By working from her sketches and allowing intuition to guide her, she employs suggestive, rather than definitive, brushwork to convey her experiences. This approach invites viewers to engage with the paintings on a personal level, encouraging them to complete the composition and derive their own interpretations from the delicate interplay of form and abstraction.
