‘Studies of Light in a French Village’

I started these when I was commissioned to do a painting of the château in my village. The studies of light on old stone are of the de Bary house opposite the château. I walk past it every morning when I go to the local bistro for my coffee break.

I was born in the New England region of New South Wales, Australia

I have made three good choices in my life: the first was to choose a career in art; the second was to marry the Irish artist Micheal Farrell. The third was to choose to live in France in the village of my Huguenot ancestors.

Frederic III & Eleanor of Portugal in Rome
41×42cm oil on canvas

1452, Frederick III travelled to Italy to receive his bride, Eleanor of Portugal. They met in Sienna and travelled to Florence and then to Rome, where he was crowned Holy Roman Emperor.

Maximilian I, was the son of Frederick III and Eleanor. Called ‘the Last Great Knight’.
Mary of Burgundy is said to have fallen in love with Maximilian through his letters. According to legend, Maximilian set off for Burgundy after arranging a proxy marriage. He was an impoverished suitor, thanks to Austria’s penchant for war. So, it is said, as he traveled through his native land, villagers pressed upon him gifts of gold and silver that enabled him to secure a diamond ring for Mary. History was made when Archduke Maximilian of Austria presented the first known diamond engagement ring to Mary of Burgundy.

The path I have chosen is thanks to certain people in my life. My parents encouraged me to develop my artistic talent and gave me the best education possible: the New England Girl’s School (1969); a Bachelor of Arts from Sydney University (1972); a diploma from Shillito Design School; a post-graduate diploma from St Martin’s School of Art in London.

I would not be doing what I am doing if I had never met Phyllis Shillito.

Thanks to Walter McVitty I have had six children’s books published.

I thank the late Paul Gottlieb, my New York publisher from Abrams, who loved and encouraged my work

Many people are intrigued that I have a very limited palette. Two reds, two blues, two yellows and white. No black. A result of studying colour under Phyllis Shillito in Sydney for three years

Another thing many French people ask is what is the style? I usually answer, it’s my style…….but I use French illuminated manuscripts and the so called International Gothic for reference

‘Studies of Flowers’

After an exhibition in Uzes in May 2023, I decided to give myself a painting lesson until I found inspiration for a new theme to work on. Nothing like doing studies after the Old Masters. There is a story behind the Dirck de Bray studies. The original painting, “Daffodils and Other Flowers in a Glass Vase” belongs to a friend of mine’s family. Their collection of 17th century Dutch Masters was on loan to the Kunstmuseum in Zürich for twenty years. Following a fire in 2022, the paintings were put into storage. After the building was restored they found that two of the paintings were missing, including the de Bray painting, of which I have made these individual studies.
